1Useful, but not as a Firewire ExtenderAug 14, 2009
By Tim Gooch "Why waste time cursing darkness if you can light candles?"
I have mixed feelings about this product, for several reasons.

First, it was exactly what I wanted/needed, and the initial shipping was fast and easy. The price is right, and the cable appears to be well-made.

Unfortunately, the first cable, out of the box, made a nasty popping sound when I plugged it into my Maxtor Firewire External disc drive. The smell of burned semiconductors gave me little hope that the cable would work, and sure enough, it was dead. I called the original manufacturer, AntOnline, and explained my situation. The extremely helpful support guy talked to their Firewire guru, determined I had a defective cable, and shipped out a new one, which I received in a matter of days.

Even more unfortunately, the second cable popped/smoked too. At this point, I was blaming my Firewire drive for being defective, but all the other devices that I connect to it still seem to work perfectly. Subsequent communication with AntOnline has resulted in nothing but crickets...

So now I have two cables, both useful only for tying things down. For that purpose, they'll probably work fine. As Firewire extenders, they're pretty useless. - Tim

Addendum:

It's now been several months, and the AntOnline people have stopped responding to my emails after I sent both of the cables back. I received no refund, so now I am in the unenviable position of not even having those firewire-look-alike tie-down cables. - Tim

1Overheating Firewire Cable Extender? Who would have thought it.Sep 01, 2009
By G. R. Wieland
I bought this firewire extender to replace a somewhat bulky Gefen product that worked perfectly but was a little large for my cable run conduit. I had read the review about the overheating/smoking problem and thought "Gee that guy was unlucky - he had two with the same problem". I should have heeded his advice and hope others reading this do too. I connected the new extender cable to the same regular cable I had been using and connected them to a Mac Mini and a Drobo. After a few minutes the M/F end of the extender got alarmingly hot and the Mac Mini would not recognize the Drobo anymore. I plugged the Gefen extender back in and everything was fine. I guess the lesson is: read the reviews and take them seriously.

1. I've been looking for this item and got it from Amazon.com
This item really works.

2. Using it for main DV camera 1394 cable to computer.

3. I'm also using my second DV camera as a PC/Skype Camera.
16.4 ft long cable allowed me to shoot video from a distance.

5Awesome cables that work !Jun 24, 2009
By A. E. "AE"
I was very skeptical about these extension cables. I wanted to capture HD video directly from my Sony camcorder into a computer via Adobe On Location.
Since I needed 2 of these "active" extension cables I thought that it will never work without issues but I decided that it is worth trying. Glad that I did...

Everything works perfectly! Highly recommended!

1Not GoodFeb 10, 2011
By Riding in America
Thought I had found a great deal but ended up having the unit replaced numerous times. Finally gave up and bought a different cable. Kept blowing a fuse and shutting down my computer-very scary. DO NOT recommend this product. Company was very good at replacing them, but it got a little ridiculous after the 5th and 6th one. Must have been a bad batch. You get what you pay for!
